This selection is a Hybrid Multichannel Super Audio CD. The Stereo Hybrid SACD program can be played on any standard compact disc player. The DSD Surround and Stereo programs require an SACD player for playback. This selection is also available in standard CD format. This selection is also available on cassette. It might be said that if there had been no Hildegard von Bingen someone would have had to invent her, but, if she had been invented, no one would have believed it. And yet, what is more remarkable: that this Benedictine nun founded two convents, authored books of history, language, medicine and poetry, painted, had strange visions and challenged the seats of power, or, that nearly a thousand years after her birth she has suddenly become the best-known composer of the Medieval world? Hildegard's seventy-odd musical compositions, published as the 'Symphony of the Harmony of Celestial Revelations' are all monophonic sacred vocal works, but they are chants with a twist. Full of brilliant poetic images, they feature wide ranging, ornamented melodies and surprising leaps, creating a mood that might be called ecstatic. 11,000 VIRGINS places seven of these in the context of a program of chants for the feast of Saint Ursula. Anonymous Four sings them with their characteristic, almost uncanny purity, adding occasional drones and harmonies to vary the texture.

XTC: Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding. Recorded at Andy Partidge and Colin Moulding's home studios in England. Includes liner notes by Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding. As they did with APPLE VENUS VOLUME ONE and its companion demo album HOMESPUN, XTC offers up this peek at the making of their APPLE VENUS VOLUME TWO (WASP STAR). Reduced to a duo of Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding, XTC continues to work as they have for most of their history, individually creating detailed demos of their songs at their own home studios. Both writers have fairly detailed and explicit notions for the shape of their songs, with these demos sounding remarkably like their finished counterparts, albeit with not as much sonic breadth (some were done direct to cassette and none have the real drums which we utilized on the final recordings). A few numbers are heard in a couple of different versions, showing the course of development moving nicely forward. The 24-page booklet has the duo providing their annotations about the songs' origins and evolution, along with early drafts of their lyrics.
