All tracks have been digitally remastered. Originally released in 1981, this 1999 reissue adds a couple of bonus songs making for a fine 16-track set. These three banjo players are greatly responsible for the resurgence and expansion of the instrument in the last three decades of the 20th century. Bill Keith first began exploring fiddle repertoire on the banjo in the '60s. Bela Fleck, the youngest of the trio at just 22 when this set was recorded, took his first banjo lessons from Tony Trischka. The three men perform three selections together, with the remaining featuring them individually. Additional accompaniment--which varies from song to song--is provided by players utilizing bass, mandolin, guitar, and fiddle. The music is at once inventive, as the repertoire of one instrument is adapted to another, and traditional.

The Ozrics remain true to form and rocksteady on ARBORESCENCE, an album replete with their trademarks: squooshy, splooshy cosmic whizzes, laser-sharp guitars, walloping "ethnic" percussion, and other dazzling non-sequiturs. Though the songs on this particular slab of plastic are indicative of the band's well-weathered style, it's to Joie and Merv's credit that their Eat Static offshoot injects some diffidence into the mix. The effect is most successful on the spicy techno-throb of "Dance of the Loomi," and the wittily titled "There's a Planet Here," with its slithery bassline, shuffle beat, and psychoplasmic synths. With ARBORESCENCE, the Ozric Tentacles remain capable of commanding the attention of even the most hardened space rock explorers.

This early '80s album continues Tony Trischka's fine series of recordings, which offer bracingly inventive originals nicely informed by a sense of tradition and craft. His banjo playing is by turns plaintive and dazzling (the harmonics at the close of "Pour Brel" are astounding). These 11 tunes find him joined by a veritable who's who of acoustic players, including Andy Statman and David Grisman on mandolins, and Tony Rice on guitar. The one brief solo number, "Avondale," is evocative in its combination of 20th century modernism and the unmistakable mountain timbre of Trischka's banjo. The writing throughout is sweet and smart; Trischka utilizes his accompanying players well, and their combined efforts create varied landscapes of lasting beauty.
