Full performer name: Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co. Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Co.: David Borden, Judy Borsher, Steve Drews (keyboards, synthesizer). Engineers include: Barney Cole, David Wickstrom, Steve Drews. Recorded at Celebration Sound, Ithaca, New York in 1976. Originally released on Earthquack (002). Includes liner notes by David Borden, Judy Borsher & Steve Drews. Digitally remastered by Alex Perialas (Pyramid Sound). Mother Mallard was an electronic trio who prefigured not only the '90s electronica boom, but much of the synthesizer-based music of the '70s. They were purportedly the first American all-synth ensemble, and though they never achieved mainstream success, their level of importance in on a par with contemporaries like Tangerine Dream (whose mid-'70s sound is suggested here). Unlike T. Dream, Vangelis, or any other '70s electronic giants, Mother Mallard was more closely aligned with academia-oriented New Music types such as John Cage and Gordon Mumma than with the rock world. This may account for their relatively low profile, but their music as represented here strikes a comfortable balance between the cerebral minimalism of Terry Riley and the accessible melodic approach of Klaus Schulze, Synergy, et al.

Laika: Margaret Fiedler, Guy Fixsen (vocals, guitar, melodica, Moog, vibraphone, marimba, programming); Louise Elliott (flute, saxophone); John Frenett (bass); Lou Ciccotelli (drums, percussion). Emerging from indie-pop band Moonshake (their name taken from a Can song), the duo of Margaret Fiedler and Guy Fixsen christened their new sonic venture like the first canine shot into space, and thus whipped Laika into bold new pop territory. With songs that surf upon luscious waves of Moogs, marimbas, and a motley crew of samples (mixed with a craftsman's touch), Laika carved a neat little niche for themselves in the mid-'90s, operating out of the equally inventive Too Pure label (home to fellow space critters Mouse on Mars). Some of Moonshake's twinkly charm surfaces in the acoustic fallout of drummer Lou Ciccotelli, but Laika's attractive sheen is mostly in Fiedler's mousey vocals, which skit amongst the aural nooks and crannies. From the chugging drums of "44 Robbers" to the mechanical fizzbeats of "If You Miss" to the spiraling fourth-world Moog funk of "Red River," SILVER APPLES OF THE MOON is a big, juicy byte taken from the a silicon tree.

Personnel: Steve Hackett (vocals, guitar, harmonica, rainstick); Brian May (guitar); Julian Colbeck (keyboards, background vocals); Aron Friedman (keyboards, programming); Dave "Taif" Ball (bass); Hugo Degenhardt (drums, percussion, background vocals); Billy Budis (background vocals). Engineers include: Aron Friedman, Billy Budis, Gerry O'Riordan. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Hackett has returned to the winning sounds of HIGHLY STRUNG and DEFECTOR to kick off his '90s "comeback." GUITAR NOIR resonates with some of his best playing in years and collects not only an able backing band but also a variety of different songs and styles. There are the synth-rockers "Lost in Your Eyes" and "Vampyre With a Healthy Appetite," the cascading "Take These Pearls," and even some darker, more adventurous numbers such as "Dark As the Grave" and "In the Heart of the City." The one common denominator is Hackett's chameleon-like ability to alter his guitarists' persona at will--from gentle, acoustic-inflected balladry to raw searing leads and dense electronic cavalcades. His status as a cult figure certainly isn't in danger of being tarnished; GUITAR NOIR bears both the fruit of his salad days with Genesis and the development of his solo career--an embodiment of styles he's refined by keeping a keen eye upon avenues yet unexplored.

Molotov: Tito Fuentes (vocals, guitar); Mickey Huido Huidobro. Pacp Ayala (vocals, bass); Randy "El Gringo Loco" Ebright (vocals, drums). Additional personnel: Gustavo Santaolalla (vocals, tubos, tiple); Anibal Kerpel (Hammond B-3 organ, Mini Moog synthesizer). DANCE AND DENSE DENSO was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album. On its fourth album, Mexican rap-rock group Molotov hones its eclectic sound ever further. Having crossed over to remarkable success in America and Europe in the late 1990s, the band sticks to its guns on DANCE AND DENSE DENSO, singing and rapping mostly in Spanish and churning out razor-sharp guitar riffs, fierce bass lines, and tight rhythms. The opening title track is a hard-charging rocker, while the innuendo-laced "Changuich a la Chicona" (sic) is Molotov's tongue-in-cheek take on Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Baby Got Back." Elsewhere, the stereotype-busting "Frijolero" features traditional Mexican accompaniment, and the funky "I'm the One" is the rare all-English tune. Always avoiding stagnation, Molotov continues to move forward on DANCE AND DENSE DENSO, revealing a wide sonic range and truly commendable ambition.

Were you expecting some sort of oddball Brazilian pop combo, what with a name like Fila Brazillia? Guess again! Steve Cobby, the man behind Fila and big cahona of U.K. down-tempo/trip-hop label Pork, pulls so many rabbits out of so many hats that every spin of the disc is another excursion into realms both magical and mysterious. OLD CODES is a collection of early-'90s singles, new recordings, and various ephemera from the Fila tape archives. The tracks are so brilliantly sequenced that one might never think that all the works here are from wholly unrelated recording sessions; Cobby's sense of order is the prime component in the multi-colored Fila universe. Opening with the cooing maritime vocals and salty sea-air synths of "Mermaids," and rippling all the way through the glittering synth-funk of "The Light of Jesus" and the irresistible percolations of "Fila Funk," OLD CODES ranks as perhaps Cobby's best overall work. Forget any cliches being administered within the trip-hop cabal--Cobby's beats are the ones to beat. OLD CODES is catchy in the way that the best '60s spy-show themes are, and is sure to make both your frontal lobes and front toes quiver in elastic delight.

Personnel includes: Keith Murray, LL Cool J, Redman, Too Short, Erick Sermon, Fat Joe, 50 Grand, Def Squad (vocals). Producers: Erick Sermon, Reggie Noble, Jean Claude "Poke" Oliver & Tone, The Ummah. Compilation producer: Chaz Harper. Keith Murray has been putting out some of the best hip-hop since 1993, when he exploded onto the scene with his debut single, "The Most Beautifullest Thing in This World." With the release of THE MOST BEAUTIFULLEST HITS, Murray packs together his best jams as well as covers of songs that fit his unique style. Among the standout tracks are "I Shot Ya (Remix)," with LL Cool J; "Full Cooperation," with Def Squad; and "Cosmic Slop," with Redman. The Funk Lord, super-producer Erick Sermon, produced most of the tracks on THE MOST BEAUTIFULLEST HITS. Listeners should be sure to check out Redman and Sermon on "How's That" and "Def Squad Delite," in which the pair recreates a late-'90s version of "Rapper's Delight." Don't sleep--Keith Murray is for sure one of the illest MC's.

Personnel: Spice 1, Noreaga, Saafir, Too Short, Yuckmouth, Spook Tha Man, Half-A-Mil, Ike Dirty, Din Fin, Kyoz, The Luniz (rap vocals); Roger Troutman, Danesha Simon, Cherelle Fortier (vocals); Kirk "Kizzo" Crumpler (various instruments); Michael Denten (guitar); Tony Harmon (keyboards, drum programming). Producers include: Rick Rock, Dave Meeze, Mo'Benjamin, Grand Exultant, Kirk "Kizzo" Crumpler. In the early '90s, following the lead of his mentor, the prolific Too Short, Bay Area rapper Spice 1 released albums chronicling the stark realities of ghetto life. What made Spice 1 unique at the time was the completeness of his lack of reflection on the subject in his rhymes. His life was what it was and nothing else, no remorse, no joy. Spice 1 manages to still find his niche on his sixth album, IMMORTALIZED, despite the exponential explosion of similar rappers thanks to the grassroots success of labels like No Limits. Spice 1 hardly alters his style or stance, which is abundantly clear on tracks such as "U Can't Fade Me," a raw story about a pregnant girl claiming paternity that will be patently offensive to most women who breathe oxygen. While much of the record does feature similar disturbingly violent, often hateful lyrics, to be upset about them would miss a main point. What's remarkable about Spice 1 is his cold, textbook view of his world, innovative then, still vital in 1999. What's easy to overlook about Spice 1 is the excellence of his vocals, which weave and bob through his ebb-and-flow lyrics, spreading his bleak gospel.
