Solo performer: Thelonious Monk (piano). Recorded between October 31, 1964 and February 23, 1965. Originally released on Columbia (9149). Includes liner notes by Martin Williams, Peter Keepnews. From the virtuosic stride of Art Tatum to Sun Ra's brand of outer-limits logic, these sides read like a holistic jazz piano guide. Recorded during a 1964 run at California's "It Club," the performances contained herein offer an intensely personal experience of the "mad genius" alone at the keyboard. Most of the cuts clock in at less than three or four minutes. More than half of this material is standards, the Tin Pan Alley of Monk's youth. "Dinah" is a sweet 1925'er, rendered in fairly straight fashion. Monk's percussive emphasis gives his bass notes the oom-pah of a tuba as his right-hand dances gaily through the golden melody. "Ruby My Dear" is a lovely ballad, given an almost unsettling spaciousness here. The improvisation is relatively spare, with several rounds of the melody grounded in heavily-planted voicings and occasional lead-ins. "Monk's Point" has the simple insistency of many other Monk blues tunes, his left and right hands having a grand time tossing the spotlight back and forth in the solo.

One of Weather Report's most varied and exciting records, overflowing with daring keyboard chops, saucy, multi-ethnic rhythms, molten-hot textures and boundless energy. By this point, Zawinul was becoming the elder statesman of fusion, his mastery of his synth arsenal unparalleled by anyone save Chick Corea. But where Corea opted for the far reaches of Hubbard space, Zawinul rooted himself in virtual rainforests, where teeming exotic aggregates of organic life possessed their own unique grooves. On "Nubian Sundance," Zawinul's keyboards cut colorful swathes through dense jungle funk bottomed out by Ishmael Wilburn's drums and Miroslav Vitous' serpentine basslines. MYSTERIOUS TRAVELLER also sports the Weather Report standard "Cucumber Slumber," rippling curbside funk that finds Shorter waxing rhapsodically over Alphonso Johnson's booty-quiverin' bottom end. Superfine struts from the sultans of fusion swing.

This early 1980s collaboration between keyboard wizard Kit Watkins and drummer Coco Roussel yields interesting results. Keyboards and computers have come a long way since the making of this CD, but somehow this album avoids dating itself because of the extensive use of acoustic instruments such as piano, flute, classical guitar, and drum set. Surprisingly, many of the tracks on LABYRINTH sound like progressive rock. These tunes are structurally complex, harmonically advanced, and employ a variety of odd time signatures. This makes compositions such as "Labyrinth" and "4 Bars -- 1 Unit" sound similar to the music of late '70s bands Emerson, Lake & Palmer; and Yes. On the other hand, "Mt. St. Helens" is influenced by another kind of pop music. For this piece, Roussel plays a standard disco groove throughout. Finally, the last three tracks are thematically related to one another and are called "Cycles 1," "Cycles 2," and "Cycles 3" respectively. These three pieces are serene and mellow, and are designed to invoke a state of peace and tranquility.

These guys have as much indie-cred as Jandek and Jad Fair at Gerard Cosloy's backyard barbecue, yet their sound is as smooth and accessible as any granola circuit band. Whether they're singing in two- or three-part harmony, Ida's relaxed and unaffected vocal blend is pure aural pleasure. While primarily an acoustic guitar/bass/drums outfit, they are not opposed to throwing in a little guitar feedback or tape echo noise into a song, speaking of which Bernie Worrell (Parliament/Funkadelic) is one of the many guest musicians on this disc. WILL YOU FIND ME was originally intended for release on Capitol, and the larger recording budget suits Ida's sound well. More focused and confident than its predecessors, WILL YOU FIND ME is a joy throughout.
