Key Features and Benefits: Experience the power A 10.0-megapixel CMOS sensor combined with the DIGIC 4 image processor create the Canon HS system for improved low light performance and better image quality. The Canon HS system takes the frustration out of low light shooting. The system delivers clear, blur-free shots with the entire ambiance intact, and frees you from the sometimes unwanted effects of using the flash. Beautiful low light shots are possible at both low and high ISO speeds, and the dynamic range is expanded to retain maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. A big lens for big ambitions A bright f/2.0 lens is great for shooting in low light conditions or using a shallow depth-of-field for great images with beautiful soft backgrounds. The Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH sports an f/2.0 aperture, perfect for creating enticing portraits, by drawing attention to the face and blurring the background with its impressively shallow depth-of-field. The Macro setting lets you get even closer. The large aperture also does more. It lets you capture more nuances in low light shooting by using more of the available light. You'll be ready for anything with a lens aperture larger than even many professional sizes. Shoot video in HD and enjoy easy HD playback 720p HD movie shooting capability plus HDMI output connector for easy playback of video and photos on your HDTV. The Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH lets you record video in beautiful 720p high definition. The camera also makes it easy to enjoy HD movies (and still photos) on your HDTV with a mini-HDMI connector for direct connection to a high definition TV monitor. You'll enjoy the HD experience with no degradation of image or audio in the signal, plus the ability to display up to 130 still images at once. Take control of the action Shoot slow motion video with the super slow motion movie function or capture fast action shots with the high-speed burst mode. Whether you're going for a dreamy, creative slant when documenting family moments, or making a highlight film of your kids' greatest sport plays, you'll love the high quality capture of this feature. The camera shoots your clips at high speed and plays them back at 30fps for the inimitable super slow motion feeling you'll love. Creative effects take your photos further Bring creativity to your photos with scene modes such as miniature effect and fisheye effect. Plus low light mode for dimly-lit situations. The Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH offers creative effects similar to those found in certain professional lenses. Miniature effect creates an illusion where very large objects appear in miniature proportions. Turn soaring cityscapes into a scene in seemingly dollhouse-like proportions. Shoot it your way Shoot like a pro with aperture- and shutter-priority modes for extra control of your images. For photography enthusiasts, the ability to control aperture and shutter speed is key. The aperture- and shutter-priority modes on the Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH make it easy for anyone to take extra control over the look and feel of images captured. We could reecommend this camera to anyone. wE are very happy with ours. We get good quality photos with ours. It is small enough to carry, but does the job of a much bigger camera.

I bought this camera to take to Israel with me in Nov. 2010. Trip was 10 days long and I didn't want to carry around a large, heavy camera. I bought 2 8GB high speed cards to go with it. I took just over 700 pics and maybe 45 minutes total of video. This camera exceeded my expectations! Battery life was a little less than I'd have liked but I made it through each day with excess capacity. ALl my pics were great. I did touch some up with software to print them out or share but really didn't have to. Since then I have used it many times and learning to use more functons. If this camera is in your price range I highly recommend it.

Let me say up front; bought the camera because of the good low-light capability, wider lens, size and durable feel. (would have liked RAW and avchd but there are always compromises) Love the low light capability - does a great job. And pictures in good lighting are usually excellent. On those fronts in am very very pleased. Major problem = focusing. There are 2 points where this crops up. 1. In good lighting, it seems that if I just push the button too quickly, the focusing isn't always accurate. I seem to need to 'pause' at the 1/2 way point and let it settle before I shoot. 2. In lower light, I have found many times that while a picture seems decently focused on the screen, once I download it to edit, it is obviously not in focus, not even close enough to be useful other than to post to Facebook for laughs. I have had the camera since November and will be calling Canon to see what they recommend. My only solution so far is to be very very patient, and tell people to 'pose'. No candid shots. Photography is a nice hobby for me, so I know the basics very well. Wouldn't call myself a pro, but I am not an amateur either.

To fix the problem with autofocus when shooting video, you can just press the shutter half way and lock the focus with the dial -press left-. It will simply not change the focus, something that for some videos can be a solution... Only drawback so far: no CHDK available (yet), i.e. no RAW, no control over flash intensity and no Super Quality JPEG files. The Low Light feature delivers outstanding performance in my opinion, 2.5MB only, but really worth it. I hope it helps.

Ok - I have been a Canon Fan for a long time - going way back on the early realeases of their SD line. I have had numberous ELPH's - and I can honestly say besides its excellent low light capability - the rest of the features and picture quality = leave me wanting. I have had problems with the camera trying to focus, startup delays, color satuartion, and flash "bleach". Too the camera just does not feel like a canon. Someone it feels very cheap. When compared to my older DS990IS - the 4000 just comes up short. I am not done with Canon - I think they still have some of the best technology on the market - but need to focus...all puns intented back on quality photos not just new features, colors, and names to keep me on board.
