Product Details

The PN-40 comes equipped with a three-axis electronic compass that can provide compass direction while stationery. The electronic compass is disabled when moving and the GPS heading is used. The PN-40 makes it easy to calibrate the compass for use in the field; simply follow the on-screen directions and you're set to go. DeLorme also includes an accelerometer, which in tandem with the compass provides the ability to figure the angle the GPS is tilted and determine an accurate compass reading regardless of how you are holding the PN-40 in your hand (tilted up, face down, etc.). Accelerometers measure the amount of static acceleration due to gravity; by sensing the amount of dynamic acceleration, the PN-40 can analyze the way the device is moving and make adjustments. The PN-40 comes equipped with a barometric altimeter for providing accurate altitude readings. The barometric altimeter works in conjunction with the GPS to measure elevation when using auto calibration (if auto calibration is disabled, then the barometric altimeter is the only sensor providing elevation information). GPS by itself can only factor an approximate altitude reading, but in conjunction with the altimeter the PN-40 can provide accurate elevation data.

Waterproof and impact resistant, the rugged PN-40 features an ultra bright screen and includes a dual processor for fast map rendering. The PN-40 is easy to use and ideally suited for all mobile professionals who need access to critical maps in the field.

I have only had this GPS for a couple of weeks, but I find it to be the best on the market. It is very accurate, although the coordinates bounce a bit in very thick woods, it does the job. Still getting to know the product and all it can do. Currently I am using it for Geo-Caching with my kids. Having a blast, glad I shopped around and found this one.

I bought this unit for geocaching and it has lived up to everything I have asked it to do. I could have waited for the PN-60 but this was the right price. Add in the delorme map library package and really you shouldn't need anything else. Whats nice is that since Topo 9.0 is out I will get a free upgrade to that software. There are only a couple cons and that is battery life and a small screen but all the other features definitely make up for these shortcomings. The battery issued is easily solved with buying some NIMH rechargables and just keeping extra sets with you.

Saw this at LLBean for $399 and wanted to get it for my husband, but it was too expensive. This is a top of the line GPS system. I was shocked to find it for $238 on walmart.com. Would recommend this unit; full color screen, great for camping, hiking, geocaching, etc!

After LOTS of research on different units, I found the features and capabilities of this unit to be just what I was after. The ability to load detailed area maps over the basic maps is great. The ability to load Hi-Res topo maps is fantastic. Loading very good resolution aerial photos and nautical charts has made me a fanatic. A number of reviewers have found the Topo8 software and upload process to have a bit of a learning curve, but what I have found is that it definitely has a process that once I decided to follow it from beginning to end, it made perfect sense. I am using the unit mounted with a RAM mount on my dual-sport motorcycle. I have taken a number of test rides with it, using routes loaded from Topo8, and have found the tracks to match the maps very closely, real-world, 5 to 15 feet while traveling at speed, through the woods. When reviewing maps on screen, the redraws are faster than anything I've seen. Lastly, I chose this unit over the Zumo 550 by Garmin. Though this unit is not as conducive to buttons pushed with gloves on, and it doesn't have Bluetooth or a built in MP3 player, what it does have is amazing agility. I can run powered on the M/C, pop it of in a second and the internal batt takes over, walk up to the very top, and I mean the top of a peak, take a look around, mark my way-point , pop it back on the bike, go home, download the track in a second and superimpose it on Topo8 and tel my wife, "I stood at the exact top of that mountain right there" and show her the spot on any kind of map, aerial or satellite image! I LOVE my PN-40! Rey.

First time GPS user, I had no issues with this device. Did allot of research before this purchase and this product is user friendly, has way more usable features than almost any competitors product at this price range. So far, so good. My first Geocache use led me to the exact cache with absolutely no difficulty at all. I am very pleased with this product.
