Dumbest design ever. The hole where the sensor cable leads out of the smoker leads into the upside-down dome that contains the electronics. The issue is that the hole allows steam from the food into the dome where it condenses and soaks the electronics! It was malfunctioning and I took the detachable control box off of the unit and water was dripping out of it. I'm returning it now. Also, no way available to use the 4 year maintenance plan that I bought.
Though the packaging was all intact- nothing looked out of place- when we got the smoker completely out the door looked damaged but the damage was under the styrofoam- so probably was that way before it shipped. The door looks a little off as well not squared to the base.
Ordered on of these smokers after seeing how well my brother-in-law did on a tri-tip when visiting his home. I added it to me outdoor cooking arsenal which includes a Big Green Egg and a Charbroil Gas grill. The unit came well packaged with minimal assembly required. After doing my initial 3 hour seasoning of the unit yesterday (cleans out and chemical residue from production), I decided on breaking this unit in by smoking a 5 lb. brined chicken for our family's dinner. The smoker was so easy to set up, got up, held the 275-degree setting throughout the 5-hour smoking session and added smoke from my hickory chips for about 30 minutes. The chicken was perfectly cooked, tender and delicious. One tip I would offer - instead of using the smoker's water pan, purchase some disposable aluminum pans, set one on the bottom rack of the smoker and place your meat after that. You will appreciate when it comes time to clean up. I don't see me using this unit all the time as it will only reach a high temp of 275 degrees but for some items, it will work handsomely. At the price I found at Walmart, I thought it was a good value.
I bought the 40" electric smoker specifically to smoke kielbasa amd other sausage. After about 6 weeks, and 40 pounds of sausage, I'm more than satisfied with the results obtained for what I consider to be a bargain price unit! I use a ThermoWoeks Smoke to monitor internal air temperature amd it is rarely more than a few degrees off the digital readout. My only minor disappointment is not getting smoke below a smoker set point of 185F.
