My husband bought me a Go Big machine for Christmas and after researching rag quilts, I decided to buy the larger Go rag square die to make my first rag quilt. I watched the videos on the Accuquilt website to make sure I followed the recommendations, which is not to cut more than two layers of flannel. From the very first pass through my machine, the brand new die did not cut all the way through. I purchased the die from another retailer, and thought maybe I got a bad one, but now I had a full quilt worth of fabric to cut, so I continued on. I had only gotten through a small stack of fabric when the die was getting worse, almost like scoring the fabric rather than cutting it. I felt like there wasn’t enough pressure from the machine to cut the flannel, so I put a few pieces of paper on top of the mat and passed it through the machine. That did the trick for the most part. I still had to cut some threads, but it was much better at cutting through. I had an idea that maybe the Accuquilt Go was better for this die, and ended up getting a used one to save on costs. That was definitely the way to go, because it cut through perfectly. Overall this is still a good die, because it saves on a lot of manual cutting. You just may have to be creative when using it depending on the type of machine you’re using it on.
It's so easy to work down my stash with this double 5 " die. It's even easy t fussy cut. Our group makes between 400 and 500 Christmas stockings a year for the Tucson VA hospital and that gives us stacks of Christmas fabric scraps. This is my second die of this size, and it makes the work so much faster.
Made a small baby quilt with this die...i used minky material & Flannel...love the way it feels, but minky made a mess when cutting...i only cut 3&4 layers of flannel or minky at a time...i also put batting inbetween the two layers to make it warmer. It was more work and twice as many squares, but it turned out great!
If you love to pick your dies and don't mind the frustration of doing it after each cutting pass, then this is the die for you. I wish I had gone on and invested in the Studio rag die equivalent. I find this die tedious even though it does what it is expected to do. I think I would have found the Studio die to be better able to cut without so many remains left behind in the die.
I purchased this die because I make mug rugs to sell at my office, I work for a veterinarian, the mug rug money goes to a local rescue group. I was marking and hand cutting before this, wow, this sure has made a difference, I love it, so fast!!! Thank you for this wonderful product!!!
