This fork and spoon set is super cute, but I have found to be less practical for my 10 month old to actually use. They are the tiniest set I have come across and I was curious. They are about 40% shorter than the other standard utensils on the market (pictured against 2 other brands). I make all of our baby's food (steam & puree, cube & steam, cooked foods, etc.), and did not find that these utensils actually hold the food very well, especially once you guide your infant's hand-to-mouth gesture. The bulkiness was not practical for our baby to fit this and the food into his mouth (and he is on the top end of height and head size for his age, he is not a petite baby and does not have small features). I do not recommend these for these uses: - stabbing cubed foods - this fork can't - teaching/guiding your infant's hand-to-mouth motion - the eating ends are bulkier than standard metal and hard plastic utensils, making it harder for baby to take the bite of food, and the handle is very short making it hard to help baby hold the utensil and then for you hold it to guide their hand - holding / balancing food on the utensil for actual eating - it's easier for baby to fling the food off of these than anything else - if your baby is more interested in actually eating food than chewing on a teether or playing during mealtimes I have found the Munchkin and Oxo utensil sets to work much better for our 10/11 month old, who wanted to dive right into actually feeding and eating the food by himself, which he's largely doing now. If you are really just looking for something for you baby to chew on and hold during mealtimes than actually practicing self-feeding, then this set will be fine for you. The quality is fine, and I have other Bumkins products that we really value and use regularly, but these utensils did not do the trick for our eager-to-self-feed baby. Every baby is different. I am expecting another child in about 4 months and will hold onto these to see how the new baby takes to them, and try them at a slightly earlier age.
Removing one star because the fork is silly (too bendy) - it would be better if this was a set of two spoons. But both the fork and spoon are working well for my purposes, which is exposing my 4.5 month old to peanuts. He won't open his mouth to be fed, but he will stick chew toys in his mouth. So I put a thin smear of peanut butter on the utensil and give it to him to chew on. I think these will work well for introducing lots of new flavors this way.
My baby loves these. I bought the Grabease first but he prefers the soft silicone to the hard plastic. The shield prevents him from gagging on the spoon and the thick handles are easy for him to grab. I just throw them in the dishwasher and they come out perfectly clean.
My 16 month old son holds them very easily and seems to like attempting to use the spoon. They are a very soft rubber so it can't really hurt your child or you, your dog, or any other innocent bystander within throwing distance. The hand guard prevents being able to put it deep into a container. I gave it only 4 stars because the fork is pretty useless as a fork. The tines are very thick, rounded, and spaced somewhat far apart making it near impossible to stab anything especially considering how soft the rubber is.
This is a great product... My daughter gags on plastic spoons sometimes but these silicone spoons are perfectly safe. She's also teething so this is perfect for her. The great thing is food stays on the spoon much better than with other spoons. Spills are much lesser. That's a definite plus because my daughter doesn't yet understand gravity and shakes her spoon in all directions before putting it into her mouth.. Hehe.. I'm planning to order another set..
