I bought this vacuum last January (now the end of November) because my son has horrible allergies. This vacuum has helped tremendously. I use it every day or every other day since I've bought it. I was surprised when I got on to buy one for my mother-in-law that it had gotten such horrible reviews. It cleans amazingly! Everytime I vacuum our house (960 sq. ft.) it picks up soooooo much! I clean the filters every other week or so and do a good wipe down. It started making the "loud noise" everyone has complained about a few weeks ago...all it needed was a new HEPA filter (should replace every 90-120 days and I hadn't). First time I used it after replacing the filter...BAM...like the first day I bought it. Also, this is not very heavy as I read in other comments. Compared to the $20 vacuums it sure is but it is a vacuum and a good one at that so of course it's going to weigh something. I highly recommend this product and will be buying it for my mother-in-law to use at her house.
I immediately reserved judgement when I opened the box and found the STOP sign that said you cannot return this item to the store. Loved it the first time I used it. The second time, it began making a loud noise. Followed the box instructions and called the closest repairman in my area. He insulted me for buying this vacuum, because he would never sell it in his store. It still picks up most of the time. I don't like having to constantly clean the filters. It still makes the VERY loud annoying noise. I get aggravated every time I use it. Within three months, I was ready to buy a different vacuum.
I have 6 kids and absolutely LOVED this vacuum at first. I purchased it in December of 2007 and it worked great.....so great that my canister and filters were full after each room. I thoroughly cleaned each of the 4 filters regularily and emptied the canister very frequently. I was so pleased to have a vacuum that finally worked so well. I have had no problems with the roller or the belt and the suction is incredible....but all of the sudden the vacuum became EXTREMELY LOUD. It is almost unbearably loud. I have taken everything apart and all seems to be fine. The roller is still rolling, the suction is still wonderful, but I am afraid to use the vacuum because I am afraid that something is wrong with the motor. It seems to be a common theme after several months of use. I am hoping to exchange it and try again. If Eureka could fix this problem - it would be almost a perfect vacuum (the self cleaning duster would be my only complaint - it just pushes the dust off of objects and doesn't capture much dust)
I'm a Mechanical Engineer, so I was looking for a well built vacuum. We've owned Bissell and Hoover before. This time, we wanted a vacuum that will last and doesn't have obvious design problems. First, let me say this Eureka Capture is well designed. The brush roller ends are steel hex shaped and fit into a hex holster on the housing... not the typical plastic ends into a slotted hole. The belt drive shaft end of the motor is supported by a single piece steel frame, securely bolted down... not the typical single metal clip screwed into plastic. The wheels actually have steel rod axles. I looked at the air intake, suction arrangement and each of the features. As an experienced Mechanical Engineer, I can say this is a well built vacuum. It performs well too, good suction and outstanding air filtration design. The only problem I saw is access to the belt & roller. You have to remove 4-screws and take off the top cover. They could have made it easier... but still not bad. I'd rather have it secured like this than using two cheap plastic slotted knobs like my old Hoover. Assembly is simple enough for a small child. There are only two parts to install and total of four screws to tighten. That's it. 10 minutes or less, and your ready to use it. The vacuum is a bit heavier than most, but that's because it is so sturdily built. Eureka did a lot of things right on this design.
I am so disappointed in this product. It is very loud. It's heavy and difficult to carry up the stairs. The hose is too short and has no suction power. It clogs constantly under just normal conditions and we've had to take it apart numerous times in order to find the clog. I would not recommend spending your money on this.
