Purchased the auger to do about 20 post holes for a current fencing project, expecting to use it for a future project requiring 30 holes. Unit came with a 6" auger, but I purchased an additional 10" auger as I am putting Quikcrete around the 4x4 wooden posts. Depth of post holes are approximately 30" deep. Clay soil. With the 10" auger, I can do about two holes and then have to charge again. Charging takes about 4-5 hours. Not nearly what I was hoping. Other reviews had said over 20 post holes on a charge. They must be digging in soft sand. I think even with the 6" auger, the battery expectations would not achieve what I wanted. Would not recommend.
Excellent for the money. Easier to deal with than gas and has plenty of power. I will say that in the NC clay I got 5-6 30in holes dug on a charge. Pretty much what I was expecting but might be a deal breaker for some. I will say for a fence post I'd go with an 8" bit as well. I have recently purchased the 40v version for a larger fence job and hope that it will last longer. For what this is though it's a little beast. It does have a small learning curve to get adjusted to the kickback and power. A bit of a different experience than with gas. For light jobs, possibly a small fence (20 posts or less) this is an awesome tool. If you're already in the 20v line of tools then you won't have to worry about the charge time like I did. I will say, the battery does charge from almost dead to complete in about an hour and a halfish, not terrible. Overall, this auger really impressed me for a 20v product.
This auger is by far one of the nicest products the Sparks Program has offered! We live on the southern coast of North Carolina where hurricane season starts June first and ends November thirtieth. We have a wooden privacy fence that has gone through 22 years of hurricane seasons. It is not as sturdy as it once was and there is always the worry that a strong storm will take part or all of it down. With the auger we are able to drill holes next to already existing posts add a new post and give the fence much more stability, security for us and peace of mind. The auger is not overly heavy to carry and use. Having a 4AH battery gives it plenty of power and it is so nice not having to deal with long extension cords! It will save a lot of time and money. We would have to hire a fence company to secure our fence which would be expensive or rent an auger and have to complete the job quickly with high rental fees. We will also use the auger to make holes for flowers we will plant across the front of the house along with other plants and small bushes.
This dug into my yard dirt like it wasn't there! I had to stop fast not to dig a really deep hole in my yard for the test. This is going to be really handy around the shop. I have a lot of 4x4 posts to put in!
The issue I had with this auger was the grass and roots. It just sat and spun even with lots of downward pressure on it. I had to pull it up and clean the cutting edge off and then it dug just fine. Lots of power to do the job and I really appreciate the anti-kickback that would prevent you breaking your wrist. I think it would work the best on dry, grass free surface but how many times do you dig in ideal conditions.
