It's not terribly complicated to put together, it just takes a while (and a screwdriver). The tracks around the edge are quite clever, as they keep the table pieces snug together. It annoys my husband that the decor on the table (e.g. water, sand, grass) does not match the train tracks on top, so the train runs happily over rivers. I don't think my sons mind. The tracks and figures themselves are nice and sturdy, and I like the boxes underneath. I think the boys will have lots of fun with this!

We bought this a few years ago, and it was fairly hard to assemble. The instructions were pretty complex, but the worst part is that we dissembled it and when we tried to reassamble it the pieces disconnect way too easily. You'd almost have to glue the pieces to get them to stay together. Disappointing.

This item is pretty neat, if only the pieces would stay together. We are constantly having to put pieces back together in excess. We keep having to revert back to the installation directions because, the pieces don't fit together unless they are in the right spot. This can be a long process since none of the tracks are numbered. I will indeed purchase hot glue and glue the pieces together to insure they dont fall apart from my children putting the train on the set. Kind of bumed that at this price, keeping the train tracked is this much of an issue.
