Brooklyn, NY-based quintet Les Savy Fav juxtapose layers of art rock on a canvas of tongue and cheek Francofilia. Formed by music-loving Rhode Island School of Design students, 3/5 is their first release. Beginning with an introduction in French and hinting at the rock that is to follow, the intro fades in and out teasingly. The noodly, distorted guitar lines and crashing beats in the dirge-like opening are exactly what the remainder of the album brings. Inserting art aesthetics into music is nothing new for Rhode Islanders, and Les Savy Fav nod to geographically and audibly similar band Six Finger Satellite. Where Six Finger Satellite use high-pitched sonics, Les Savy Fav box the listeners' ears with emotional lyrics. The words from "Je t'aime" tell a story of a rich man who falls in love with his servant, even at the risk of losing his fortune upon discovery. The guitars loop around the lyrics rhythmically, pausing for dramatics and crashing down when the singing begins again. The song circles back and forth, with the words, "Je t'aime" screamed out till the end. 3/5 is great platform that leaped into Les Savy Fav's second release, THE CAT AND THE COBRA
