This is a very nice quality train - the engine is heavy and made of metal, not plastic or light weight. It reminds me of the vintage trains made years ago. The smoke is great - puffs of smoke clouds and the sounds are terrific. It is nice that you can turn the smoke and sound off if you want. The track is nice and stable after you get it pushed together. It was a little hard to snap the track initially, but once it is joined, it is not going to disconnect. What a great train to run around our Christmas tree but it can be used year round for fun. Everything you need is in the box except three AAA batteries. Nice buy and good price.
I received the Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer LionChief Remote Control Steam Freight Set for free through the Walmart Spark Review program. I love this train! It is very well made with a heavier metal, not the lighter more "aluminum can" feeling metal in which many other trains are made. The track is very nice and can be used for temporary or permanent displays. I would recommend using 4x8 homasote boards to build a more permanent display. However, this train will work right out of the box with the provided track. I am currently working on a more permanent train display with my daughter. We are having a great time with this Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer train. My dad was a Lionel Train collector before he passed away. This train would definitely meet his approval.
Growing up I had a good sized permanently mounted set of HO scale model trains and cars that provided a lot of imagination driven play time. But most of my friends had the larger scale Lionel train sets and those always seemed to be easier to handle and more realistic. Our little boy is a big fan of Thomas and Friends but is old enough to appreciate a good model railway set, so we began looking at options and selected the Pennsylvania Flyer set from Lionel. What a great choice! This electric train set comes with an engine, tender and two cars and caboose. And even though it is several decades later, the quality and impressive detail of the cars and the quality construction is as good, or better, than it was in my youth. In recognition of the fact so many homes have carpeted floors the Lionel three rail track is now mounted to a molded base mimicking gravel ballast providing a wider, more stable base. What a great idea as keeping the track sections together on soft surfaces is always a challenge, especially when the “Engineer” is a toddler. The Pennsylvania Flyer remote control is a good fit for young hands and with a bit of adult supervision the simple controls are quickly learned. The smoke generation from the engine, still a big highlight of the Lionel train system and the whistle brings back fond memories. Our little boy found the addition of train station and Conductor announcements intriguing. The provided oval track was perfect for setting up around the Christmas tree and so a new family tradition has begun.
Lionel's Pennsylvania Flyer LionChief Remote Control Steam Freight Set This train set is easy to set up and take apart. It has great portability and storage factors. The instructions are easy and basic to follow. My 14 year old had the train up and running within 15 minutes. It is made from quality materials that look and feel durable. It isn't going to snap apart or break with simple use and normal movement. The tracks have realistic looking detail. My 7 year old commented that they look like real train tracks! The cars and engine work great, and look realistic in detail. The engine smokes with a little liquid steam. It comes included with this train set. You can use the remote to turn it on, put it in reverse, or change speed settings. After you have it running however you want you can sit back and put your imagination to work! My son and son-in-law tried different track configurations and even seeing if it could go over hills or bumps if the track weren't level. This train succeeded with all terrains attempted. This train model is electric powered so you plug the track into the wall to power the train. You do need batteries for the remote. This is a very nice starter set for a beginner, or a fun set to enjoy with family or children. My 6 month old granddaughter laughs and laughs at this train. It truly is something every age can enjoy. Young children should, of course, be supervised, but everyone is going to love being entertained. I think I'm going to put it around the base of our Christmas tree for a visual entertainer and for conversation starters during the holidays.
My first words to you regarding the Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer Lion Chief Remote Control Steam Freight Set are these: You will need strength, endurance, and a great deal of patience. You will also need enough room to lay flat a 57" x 38" track, and three brand-new AAA batteries for your remote control. The most difficult and aggravating part of the assembly was putting the track together. In the old days, the track was all metal and lay flat on the floor. These tracks are made of plastic with metal sliders welded into them. The train and its cars are also plastic, except for the wheels. Clicking each part of the tracks together to create a secure oval is back-breaking work. Be careful, or you might wind up snapping one of the pieces in half. They are very lightweight and not very durable. Once the track is put together, with the wall-pack terminal section facing OUTWARD so that you can plug it in, you arrange the train as follows: locomotive, tender, boxcar, chemical car and the caboose last. Plug in the wall pack power supply to the corresponding hole in the terminal section and connect to an electric socket. If everything is correctly placed, you will hear the train start huffing, just like a train waiting for the engineer to start it moving, and you will see the headlight beaming brightly. Be sure to put your batteries in the remote control and turn on the switch at the side that says ON/OFF, or else nothing will happen. Once the switch is ON, you will see a red light glow on the remote, whose use is self-explanatory. Playing with the train took me back to my childhood. It's been over 60 years since I last engineered a Lionel train, back when all the parts were made of metal and my mother and father put the train together the night before Christmas. I don't know how difficult it was for them to assemble, but I do know that I enjoyed many very happy hours with my old Flyer, which I have always regretted losing to time and space. But I enjoyed just as much playing with my brand-new Lionel train all afternoon. The train emits perfect little smoke-rings as it chugs around the track, and by pressing the remote control buttons, it will make important train sounds like "Whoo-oo!" and "Ding-ding-ding!" You can even hear the engineers talking to each other. I wanted to see how fast I could make it go, and it really zipped around the track. On moving it backwards, however, I finally managed to derail it. If that ever happens, you should turn everything off and reset your train carefully back on the track. Afterward I noticed a burning odor, but I assume that was from the smokestack, as no part of the track or the electric components were overheated or crackling. Once the train was turned off, the odor went away. Any child who loves trains will love this Lionel Pennsylvania Flyer. As an adult, I can say without reservation that I love it, too. It will make a wonderful present to place under the Christmas tree--but be sure to put it together when your children are out of earshot!
