I ordered the Garmin nuvi 1100LM 3.5" GPS w/Lifetime Map Updates, however, I received a Garmin nuvi1100 3.5" GPS...only the sticker on the box indicated that lifetime maps were available as a part of the "bundle". Upon attempting to register the item online, Garmin reported that this item does not include lifetime map updates. A sticker on the box does not make it so...sadly, I am returning this item to Walmart.
The description to this led me to believe that this would work in Canada. I travel from Michigan to Boston, New York City, and other east coast areas so I like to go through Canada. This product will NOT work in Canada. It wouldn't even find Ontario which is 45 minutes away from me. I tried to look and see if I could get an upgrade but nothing was available. I took it back and bought another brand of GPS that does allow me to go through Canada. If you don't go through Canada, I am sure it is a great deal.
Bought this on sale for $65 within the last 2 weeks. Got a box that said nuvi1100 with a sticker slapped on it that said nuvi1100LM. Downloaded the map updater from Garmin which identified the device as a plain 1100 and said that it did not qualify for map updates. Contacted Garmin support who told me the serial number was not valid. Returned the product to WalMart. Hope I get a refund. If not, it's the last thing I will buy from WalMart.
This GPS unit is fairly easy to use, but has a several shortcomings. It is near impossible to customize a route ahead of time. I tried several times including downloading a route I made online, but the unit kept on selecting it's preferred route. It also does not tell you street names for exits - I had a situation where there were two right exits and it told me to take the "right exit". I chose the wrong exit and and had to turn around during rush hour. This GPS unit also sent me to the wrong address of a business (Walmart). I also had trouble updating the maps right after purchasing the unit - it seemed to be working and then after a long time it told me the update failed, but wouldn't let me retry even several days later. Finally the manual is very basic - including the online troubleshooting guide etc. I've since returned the unit and recommend spending the money for a better GPS.
I previously owned a TomTom GPS. When my TomTom began to malfunction and it became necessary to replace the unit, I purchased the Garmin because of the Lifetime Map updates. There are some differences in the manner in which the destination is entered compared to the TomTom; however, the Garmin has been accurate in guiding me to the places I need to go. I work as a delivery driver and depend on the GPS unit to be accurate in guiding me to my destination. I also need the maps to be updated on a regular basis to include newer subdivisions and other roads that may not be on the current map. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the unit. I am still adjusting to the differences between what I was used to with the TomTom and what I now have with the Garmin.
