SmartStar-R80 with GPS

Its a little less than I expected. When I received it, the AZ mechanism had around 5 degrees of play which is WAY too much for a telescope. Called Optron and they gave me some things to check. After reassembly, the play was gone. I didn't do anything. The GoTo is so so. You MUST do as perfect an alignment as possible. There is a learning curve on this. If aligned perfectly the object should be in view using the low power eyepiece. The electronics seem to work as advertised. Haven't tried it under dark sky yet so cannot rate optics.

It doesn't magnify anything. The stars are no more visible with the naked eye. The GPS works but the magnifcation is so bad you still cannot see anything. Nothing. Total waste of money

The Ioptron telescope is a very good buy. The perfect scope for a beginner adult or child.

I purchased this primarily as an inexpensive and easy to use mount for my PST, and it fufills that duty quite well. The optical tube assembly is inexpensively made, and I have yet to star test it, but I expect it will do okay for my purposes, which is strictly visual observing. if not, it can be replaced with other OTAs. I rate this great for strictly casual observing, visual observing, and for folks who have problems with weight and set-up time. It's a "grab 'n go" scope, set-up is easy and quick. You will need to practice with it a bit, though. Any decent telescope has a fairly steep learning curve, but once you've logged that time, you should enjoy using this telescope. Reasonable cost makes it good for a beginner, too.
