I bought this for my grandson and nephews and they loved it. It kept them entertained for quite a bit. Be sure to lay something down so they can dig for the gems. Its gets quite dusty. All the tools they need are included.

Good playful method teaching children to have great patience, as they must work to get all of the Gem's from the rock. About over an hour of entertainment. We received 9 Gems from our rock. Only real disappointment was that nothing was Medium-sized, in fact most had been no bigger then a pebble. Cleanup is easy, simply use water. Will most likely buy another box in the future as our child was happy and entertained.

While I loved how engaged my son was with this project I was VERY surprised that a company like the Smithsonian would provide such poor gem and rock quality, (about the size of a small pebble I'd place in a fish bowl), the rocks look NOTHING like the cover displays and that is not only false advertising but very disappointing because my kid loves science and it was a let down. Wouldn't suggest this project unless you don't mind spending 13.00 for sand and cheap plastic glasses.

We liked this kit because it was hours of fun and excitement, but the block was really quite tough to get through, also I expected bigger rocks inside, they are tiny.

My little boy had fun smashing apart the stuff looking for gems. The goggles were too small for him to wear. The gems were very small and not really evenly distributed. Once we found all 11, we threw out the other half of the structure. About an hour of play time.
