You aren't going to come close to beating these until you go to twice the price; I've been very pleased! Yes, they are tricky to get started putting together and you may want some large needle nose pliers for delicate adjustments. The metal is stamped from steel. You want fancier? Pay more. The shelves are particle board and dusty; I've covered mine in contact paper and it solves a lot of problems, like when my son had two of these at college for a kitchen. No grade of particle board likes damp, and even in the basement you'll like that better. The sticky paper seals out moisture and makes particle board nicer all round. Mine had little rubber feet, that never quite fit. Go by hardware and get some floor protector thingys. And before rolling your eyes, remember- you'd be putting that contact paper on any grade of this type of storage you buy. Same with the feet pads. I have them all. $100 steel shelves have particle board and sharp feet too; you can't paint particle board so you still need sticky paper. But for price, and the size, you do well! And these are great for dorms, Kitchens, sewing rooms, ect. The heftier steel shelves only come bigger and often don't fit. Probably not best for piles of tools, but good for books. All over excellent value, and I'm buying more.

I bought this shelf in 3 sizes and I am writing another review for this size. I put 5 of these together by myself this weekend with only a mallet but I am a handy woman! I think these are the best value on the market. Getting started is the toughest part but once you get in the groove, it goes fast. One gal had a good point, they do not have feet but mine went in my garage so it wasn't an issue for me. I bought 3 sizes and re-did my whole garage on a Sunday. My only complaint is the smaller size (36x52x12) seems to no longer be available and I really wanted a couple more of those. If I can find them, I'm buying them! PS You can get this same type of shelf at the big boy hardware stores that offer more strenght but you are going to pay double. For me, the weight on these was just fine for general storage.

This product seemed like it would be useful. Some people had good and bad reviews, but I went on and bought it anyway, especially since I wasn't going to put heavy stuff on it. Well as soon as I got it, it was not what I expected. The material was so cheap. It was wobbly and non durable...I was better off with a plastic shelf. The wood was good, but the rest was bad. I tryed building it, didn't seem hard at all, but the material was so cheap it was driving me crazy. So I just decided to return it. If you like this shelf that's on you, but it was not for me.

This shelving unit was pretty easy to put together and all we needed was a hammer! It's serving its purpose very well.
