Chessmaster II
Review It's difficult to present a new spin on something that's been so tried and true for so many years. The basic rules of chess have not changed in more than 100 years, and as such, there's really nothing terribly innovative contained in Chessmaster II. However, Chessmaster II does boast everything a player would want in a console chess game. The concept is simple enough - it's chess. You move by selecting which piece you'd like to move and then choosing any of the highlighted blue areas that are open to that piece. If you wish to cancel your move, simply select another piece. Once you've completed a move, a God-like voice will let you know exactly what happened. There are numerous options for you to toy with, as well. You can select your opponent from a host of more than a hundred characters. Chessmaster may be the closest you'll ever get to matching wits with Karpov, with its ability to mimic the play styles of 31 actual famed chess personalities, such as Fischer, Capablanca, and Reshevsky. Despite what I thought, playing any of these guys is a humbling experience. For a lesser challenge, you can play against 64 imaginary players, all with their own imaginary play styles, imaginary biographies, imaginary ratings, and imaginary mug shots. Any single-player chess game is only as good as its AI, and fortunately, Chessmaster II's is solid. While I thought I was an exceptional chess player, this game showed me that I wasn't nearly as good as I had once believed. Chessmaster focuses on making you a better chess player. It comes with more than ten FMVs that explain strategy - from each piece and its significance, to complex moves such as castling or en passant. In addition to this, there's on-the-fly strategy, giving you advice on how to respond to scenarios. The game is filled with actual attacking and defending strategies, so you can know exactly how to operate a Queen's Gambit or run a King's Indian Attack. The graphics are nice enough. If you don't like the way things look you can change the graphical details, from board color to set type. The game has more than fifteen different chess sets, most of which are 3D. Unfortunately, some of them are difficult to make out, and overall the graphics have a really grainy look to them. You can also change the angle of the board if things get confusing. The soundtrack reminded me of listening to the new-age channel on cable radio, as it's filled with nonintrusive instrumentals that could be described as uplifting. If you're not partial to your track, you can change it. And while the God-like voice calls the move, I wished it would also tell you when a known strategy was being played, instead of just listing it in t Chess is a game best played against a live opponent. It's doubtful that a computer will ever be able to simulate all the nuances of playing against a living, breathing being. However, if you can't find anyone to play or you wish to practice, Chessmaster is definitely a viable substitute. With tons of customization options and a system that focuses on learning, Chessmaster is the clear choice for people who wish to experience chess on their PlayStation. --Ben Stahl -- Copyright 1999 GameSpot Inc. Product Description The dinosaur hunt has come to the jungle--the urban jungle, that is. In Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion, a mysterious force called the Oblivion has bridged the Lost World and ours intending to eliminate the Turok heroes and dominate the universe. And with the Oblivion's presence known, city leaders have cordoned off streets and blanketed the region with martial law. You play as either Danielle or younger brother Joseph--two siblings of Turok 2's Joshua Fireseed--with some levels and weapons unique to each character. To stop the Oblivion, you'll need to go up against more than 40 new, smarter enemies skulking through the five worlds. But if civic service isn't your thing, you can invite up to three friends for a firefight in one of the game's 40-plus multiplayer levels, including the series favorite, Frag Tag. Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion supports the Expansion Pak for better graphics resolution as well as, thankfully, an instant-save feature that can help alleviate the intensity. Amazon.com Turok: Dinosaur Hunter's legacy on the Nintendo 64 is undeniable. While the pressures of being both a commercial and (more often than not) a critical success would have tempted series of lesser quality to churn out mediocre sequels, Acclaim has not allowed this to happen. Now with the second "official" sequel (not counting Rage Wars) wreaking havoc in Nintendo land, it's time to see if the legacy is fulfilled. Visually, this is by far the best in the series. While the graphics on the N64 can only go so far, they're best utilized in the amazing cutscenes displayed throughout. Plus, the action is accompanied by an amazing soundtrack, which greatly enhances the game's atmosphere. The weapons are basically the same as those in previous Turok games, so things may seem familiar. There are new weapons, but most of them are just upgrades of the current ones you have. The only time that weapon selection will be important is during boss battles, where the rocket launcher packs a bigger punch. Not only can you save your game anywhere, but you can also continue from many checkpoints throughout the level. As you progress, you will pass checkpoints where the game pauses, and the title of the area appears on the screen. This feature is great, because when you suffer that oh-so-sudden death, you only have to go back as far as the last checkpoint instead of your last (and possibly distant) save. With the single-player mode thrown back in for the third Turok adventure, the multiplayer mode in Turok 3 doesn't seem to flow as well as it did in Rage Wars. This might be excusable, but with Rare showing how fun a single/multiplayer title can be, not once but twice (GoldenEye, Perfect Dark), it's a bit disappointing. Still, Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion is a great first-person shooter for Nintendo's aging machine that doesn't embarrass the series. --Todd Mowatt Pros: Many gameplay options Gorgeous graphics and great sound effects Realistic character and environment physics Cons: Game engine slows down in graphic-heavy sections Enemy AI isn't as good as in the first game of the series FEATURES

Draconus: Cult Of The Wyrm Dreamcast
Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm is a surprisingly fun third-person action game set in a mythical world where swords and spells settle all disputes. After choosing either a warrior or a sorceress character, players are charged with fighting their way through several beautiful (and sometimes creepy) environments on their quest to rid the world of the evil Dragon Lord. The game engine is a technical marvel, letting players move seamlessly from lush forests to the torch-lit interior of a castle. The combat seems shallow at first, but with a little practice reveals surprising depth. Both characters have tons of moves and combinations they can use to dispatch enemies--you ll have to use them all when minions rush you from all sides or you re dueling with one of the level bosses. The sorceress is a particularly fun role to play, because it requires lots of tactical brainwork for success. The characters are equipped with shields that will deflect all but the strongest blow. We were pleased to see that it s not possible simply to hold down the shield button to block; instead, you must press it each time a hit is absorbed, which adds immensely to the timing and skill required for success. Sadly, the camera is better suited for exploration than combat. We found ourselves being attacked frequently by enemies before they entered our line of sight. The whirling camera also makes it difficult to line up an enemy for either attacking or blocking, but after a few hours of practice we usually were able to compensate for this oversight. Frankly, we were having so much fun slashing our way to victory that we were willing to forgive many of Draconus faults--it stands as a great addition to the Dreamcast library. --T.
