It looks great and it sounds great, but one just can't help but feel that something is missing from the Columbia/TriStar release of the Hong Kong bubblegum vampire flick Vampire Effect. Clocking in at a mere 107 minutes in its original form (titled The Twins Effect in Asia to capitalize on the presence of enormously popular Canto-pop duo Twins), the film has unfortunately been cut down to a scant 88 minutes for stateside consumption. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image is gorgeous, sporting bright, vivid colors, and pitch-dark blacks. Audio is available in either dubbed English Dolby Digital 5.1 or original Cantonese 5.1, with optional English, French, or Spanish subtitles. Though the dubbing on the Americanized version is adequate, purists will no doubt prefer to hear the film as spoken in its original tongue. Both versions are dynamic and robust, offering solid directional effects and a hearty use of score. A handful of previews comprise the only extra features on the otherwise bare-bones disc.
