Pontederia Cordata, also known as "Blue Pickerel," are native to North America and add interest to the margins of ponds and water gardens. An ornamental plant, the clumps of leaves at the water's edge provide shelter for all types of fish, not just pickerel, giving the plant one of its common names. The green leaves are glossy, narrow and arrowhead-shaped. Flower stems rise above the leaves except for one leaf that provides a background for the tubular, soft blue flowers with yellow markings. Flowers begin to appear in June, and flowering often continues into October. Easy to grow, Pontederia Cordata can be grown in rain barrels and containers as well as ponds and water gardens. It grows and blends in well with other plants along the margins of ponds and water gardens.
