2 LPs on 1 CD: CALIFORNIA GIRL/DOWN TO EARTH. Recorded between 1969 and 1971. Soul singer Eddie Floyd had perfect foils in Booker T. and the MG's guitarist Steve Cropper and organist Booker T. Jones. Not only did they pen a number of veritable classics ("Knock on Wood" and "634-5789," among others), but the band provided thrilling backup for Floyd during his years at the Stax/Volt label. Although CALIFORNIA GIRL and DOWN TO EARTH are two very different albums, both came at a time when the fruitful Stax unity was beginning to disintegrate. While band members Cropper, Jones, and drummer Al Jackson all play on the collection, on no track do they play together. Jones stopped recording for Stax completely by the time of DOWN TO EARTH'S recording. Watching such a successful partnership dissolve may have caused Floyd to ultimately lose his moorings, but not before he went down swinging. CALIFORNIA GIRL very nearly captures the sound of Stax's heyday and spawned two hit singles: the title track and "Why is the Wine Sweeter (on the Other Side)." DOWN TO EARTH is a gripping union of southern soul with straight-ahead rock.
