Like every year, Mark Richt's 2005 Georgia Bulldogs had high expectations. However there were also many uncertainties. Could the Dawgs replace college football's all-time winningest quarterback, David Greene? Who would fill the voids left by All-American David Pollack, and defensive standouts Thomas Davis and Odell Thurman? The questions were answered early as the Dawgs rolled to a 7-0 start. Senior quarterback D.J. Shockley proved to be the catalyst on offense and defensive stars Quentin Moses and Greg Blue put the Georgia defense among the nation's elite. After experiencing two heart-wrenching defeats to Florida and Auburn by a total of five points, the Dawgs claimed the SEC Eastern Division title with a win over Kentucky and claimed state bragging rights once again with another win over Georgia Tech. The stage was set for another SEC Championship showdown with LSU. The Georgia Bulldogs claimed their 12th SEC Championship and the second in Mark Richt's five years as Georgia's head coach with its Georgia Dome victory over LSU. A team that many had questioned prior to the season had reached the top. Hard work, desire and dedication were trademarks of the 2005 Georgia Bulldogs, a team that hunkered down to become Atlanta bound.
