Featuring five contemporary compositions with distinctive Asian style, UNDER A SILVER MOON is a contemplative, serene album. The simple instrumentation of flute and harp, with the occasional accompaniment of viola and percussion, creates a delicately unfolding musical environment. 'Dance of the White Lotus Under the Silver Moon' was commissioned by flautist Susan Glaser. The fluid piece was inspired by the natural settings painted on many Chinese and Japanese screens. Composer Stella Sung creates dramatic, rapidly developing melodies, but is able to maintain the mood of serenity. Zhou Long's 'Su' is a fascinating attempt to meld traditional Chinese styles with avant-garde atonal composition. The inner tension in Jacqueline Jeeyoung Kim's 'Tiger Chasing the Wind' is as influenced by avant-garde jazz as by Korean tradition. The final piece is a Buddhist-themed journey, composed by Yoon Hee Hwang. As its title 'dharma-Dharma' explores the multiple meaning of the word, the music explores the many meanings of life.
