Full title: Hits, Misses, Trashers & Crashers. The Small Faces: Steve Marriott (vocals, guitar); Ian MacLagan (vocals, Hammond b-3 organ); Ronnie Lane (vocals, bass guitar); Kenny Jones (drums). Among the slew of mid-1960s British groups to fuse American rock and R&B with the burgeoning tripped-out sound of the day, none have been as unjustly overlooked as the Small Faces. Compared to the Stones and the Yardbirds, the Small Faces had a low profile abroad; this is a pity, because their unique brand of Brit-pop is distinguished by a keen melodic sensibility, shifting song structures, driving rhythms, Steve Marriott's impassioned vocals, and an adventurous sense of experimentation in the studio. HITS, MISSES, THRASHERS & CRASHERS is a double-disc box set that covers the band's recordings for the Immediate label between 1967 and 1969. Disc one, ABSOLUTELY THE BEST, contains the band's chart singles, including "Tin Soldier," "Itchycoo Park," and "Lazy Sunday," along with B-sides from these singles (which often match the A-sides in quality). The second disc, titled ODDS AND MODS, features the Small Faces at their most experimental. Here the drums/guitar/bass/Hammond organ line-up is expanded to feature woodwinds, odd percussion, Mellotrons, and all manner of studio effects, including tape loops, phasing, and heavy echo. Both discs are a welcome introduction to one of the era's finest, and provide a comprehensive sampling of the band at the elastic peak of their powers.
