Suited for defilade and long-range indirect fire support, mortars are effective at crippling enemy artillery and gun emplacements, and for softening up well-defended enemy positions. Mortars are typically coordinated by forward observers and radio contact with higher tactical command. On missions, Marines may wear a camouflage pattern known as M.A.R.P.A.T., which has been developed exclusively for the Marines and uses various colors and patterns to defeat enemy observation by visual sighting or infrared technology.
