[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great accessory for Mac laptops. Most organizations have an HDMI plug for presentations, and there are hubs for both USBC and USBA for power and different thumb drives. A must-have for making presentations and for personal use away from the office.
After 2 years with normal use well cared, HDMI flickers/twitches, screen dances with HZ, camera SD cards don't read on it, it covers the headphone slot. attempting firmware update, it's too costly with these issues covering all slots on the right side. A simple hdmi cable make for more cables but works.
Connection was terrible. If you slightly touched the adapter while it was connected, then everything would disconnect. Ultimately, destroyed my MacBook Pro, and gave me software issues because it disconnected so many times. Would not recommend to my worst enemies.
I got this from the Indiegogo campaign, to replace the standard Apple dongle. As far as the functionality of the device is concerned, it is as advertised. Having said that, I see great issues when using it on a macbook that is on a riser AND has a shell fitted. Any cables that come out are naturally not flat, since the laptop is on the riser. Their weight, combined with the fact that the Hyperdrive does not fit snuggly over the case, means that the Hyperdrive is getting pulled downwards, which cannot be a good thing long term for the connectors. Add an RJ45 cable which is a lot less flexible and things start getting a lot more complicated.
I can't use your devise on my new MacBook Air because for whatever reason the plug ins - ie the larger screen I use in addition to my laptop - need to be plugged into the MacBook Air directly - also I can't close the lid without detaching the HyperDrive. Honestly, I'd like to return it but I'm sure it's probably too late. I like the compactness of it and all that but I don't think it works as well with the MacBook Air as you advertise.
