Includes lyrics printed in Swedish and English. Garmarna: Emma Hardelin (vocals); Gotte Ringqvist (guitar, lute guitar, violin); Rickard Westman (guitar, e-bow, bass); Stefan Brisland-Ferner (guitar, violin, hurdy-gurdy, strings, programming); Jens Hoglin (drums). Additional personnel: Sank (bass, programming). Recorded at Studio Nevo, Swedish Radio Sundsvall, Sweden in 1998. Garmarna is a band from Sweden that combines the folk music of their native Sweden with contemporary rock and electronica. Emma Hardelin has a delicate, forlorn voice that recalls June Tabor and Sandy Denny, and the rest of the band utilizes everything from the usual rock instrumentation to violin, hurdy-gurdy and lute to loops, samples and dark electronic effects. "Brun (The Robber)" is a haunting lament, with a traditional Nordic folk melody contrasted with chilling textures that recall Wire circa 154. "Gamen (Vulture)" combines Scandinavian fiddle, Cocteau Twins/Mazzy Star-style swirling vocals and stormy techno. Full of imagination and passion, Garmarna don't treat ancient melodies as ethnomusical museum pieces. They (re)make the music anew, much as Fairport Convention, the Dub Syndicate, TransGlobal Underground and Los Lobos did before them. Excellent stuff.
