It's not farfetched to compare Jamaican DJ Beenie Man to Stevie Wonder. Like Wonder, Beenie Man was a child prodigy able to build a career on more than novelty--the kid was genuinely good. After a period where he was laid low and finished school, Beenie Man re-emerged on the early '90s dancehall scene, quickly establishing dominance as a DJ.Beenie Man is a smart, socially aware lyricist with a wide-ranging musical taste that keeps his albums from sounding stale or too similar to others' work. Not that he's not up for a little raunchy bragging, as on the opening "Stamina Lover." Elsewhere, Beenie Man's eloquent, conversational toasts come alive with lively wit, sly social commentary and an unabashed love of both language and rhythm. This compilation of his early work is always impressive and often dazzling.
