Rice originated more than 6,000 years ago in Southeast Asia and was first planted in Europe during the 8th century. While there are thousands of varieties of rice, the unique characteristics of Aromatic rice are its nutty aroma and slender shape. Vegetarian appropriate, no saturate fat or cholesterol. Chef's tip - Add 1/4 tsp. (1 ml) curry powder with the other seasonings and cook according to instructions. Add a mixture of raisins, diced apricots, seedless grapes and almonds to pilaf just before serving. Moroccan lentil rice pilaf: 1. add tsp. (5 ml) olive oil and grains to a medium sized pot. Saute over medium - high heat. Stir frequently until golden brown (about 2 - 3 minutes). 2. Add 2 cups (500 ml) water and seasoning. Stir well and bring mixture to a rolling boil. 3. Reduce heat to medium - low and cover. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has been absorbed. 4. remove form heat, stir and re- cover. Let stand for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving. For softer grains increase water and cooking time. Microwave: 1. Add 1 tsp. (5 ml) olive oil to a 2 quart (2L) microwave - safe dish. Add grains and stir to coat. 2. Cook uncovered, at medium power for 4 minutes. Stir half - way through cooking time to ensure uniform heating of the grains. 3. Add 2 cups (500 mL) water and stir in contents of seasoning pouch. mix well and cover. Cook at high power for 18 minutes. Stir occasionally during cooking to distribute flavors. Remove form oven and let stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving. Suggested cooking time may vary with different appliances.
