While playing music at the USC LA Times Book Fair, the US Postal Service asked me to play at the Miles Davis & Edith Piaff Stamp event. My investors and sponsors were more than happy to support the cause, as I flew to NY to do the gig. I also enjoyed producing the documentary to highlight this amazaming event. Ron Carter, the ledendary upright bass player, gave us a real overview to the inside track to being in the band with Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. The family of Miles Davis was on hand to represent, as Cicely Tyson told extraordinary stories about being married to him. Many other wonderful guest where involved also. A second unveiling of the stamps was held at the Hollywood Bowl where Herbie Hancock hosted and Marcus Miller with two other bands played music to honor Miles. The event was packed and I am thankful to have been a part of capturing this historical even. The Documentary and CD are called Miles Stamp! Today, the United States Postal Service and La Poste of France celebrate a lively conversation between continents with the issuance of the Miles Davis and Edith Piaf stamps. The U.S. version of the stamps, issued as Forever stamps, go on sale today at Post Offices nationwide. The U.S. version and La Poste versions can be purchased in the United States online at usps.com and by phone at 800-STAMP24 (800-782-6724). This is the first time the United States and France have jointly issued a stamp since 1989, when both countries honored the bicentennial of the French Revolution. The Miles Davis and Edith Piaf stamps also feature another historic first. For the first time, a QR code is printed on the back of the stamps. The code can be scanned with a smart phone. A landing page opens with an option to listen to music from Davis while viewing photographs and a timeline of the lives of both Davis and Piaf. There are several buttons on the landing site including a Buy Now button that enables purchasing the U.S. and French versions of the Davis and Piaf stamps as well as other related products. The landing site can be emailed, shared on Facebook and Twitter and videos may be added. Edith Piaf, forever associated with her hometown of Paris, is one of the few French popular singers to become a household name in the United States.
