Personnel includes: King Oliver (cornet); Barney Bigard, Albert Nicholas (soprano & tenor saxophones, clarinet); Louis Armstrong (cornet); Kid Ory (trombone); Johnny Dodds, Buster Bailey (clarinet); Lil Hardin, Jelly Roll Morton, Luis Russell, Clarence Williams (piano); Eddie Lang, Lonnie Johnson (guitar); Baby Dodds, Paul Barbarin (drums). This two-CD set is a gift of modern technology; here the classic jazz and blues of Joseph "King" Oliver has been excellently restored. These tracks cover Oliver's first recordings through to the end of his bandleading days, revealing a tremendous evolution. 1923's "Dipper Mouth Blues" has the characteristic free-and-easy Dixieland bounce, played by a stellar cast of musicians including Louis Armstrong. Oliver contributes a dexterous solo, and his early innovative use of muted trumpet is displayed to good effect. 1926's "Deep Henderson" finds Oliver's music moving north from Dixie to the land of Duke Ellington, incorporating harmonic sophistication and complexity in its arrangements, and with solos from Kid Ory and Barney Bigard matching the energy of the ensemble. "What Ya Want Me to Do?" from 1928 features soulful work by Oliver, guitarist Eddie Lang, and pianist Clarence Williams. This collection's splendid restoration wipes away the years from these immortal works.
