Schlunder Butter Stollen

No German Christmas celebration is complete without a Stollen on the table. This yeast-cake is similar to an Italian Panettone, except it is rounded into an oval to represent the infant Jesus in a bundle of swaddling clothes. Dotted with a generous amount of nuts and candied fruits, the traditional Stollen batter is enriched with butter before being baked to golden perfection. Schlunder Butter Stollen is imported from Germany, where they are baked following an authentic recipe for this classic treat.The sweet, buttery Stollen we know today is quite a different bread than how it originated. Like most Advent foods, Stollen was originally forbidden to contain butter, or anything else that would go against the religious principles of fasting. Only by directly appealing to Pope Innocent X was the butter ban lifted, allowing the light, sweet texture we all know and love!
