In the wake of the Cardassian-Bajoran peace treaty, the crew welcomes two Cardassian scientists on board to help deploy a communications relay in the Gamma Quadrant. Tensions escalate when Vedek Yarka (Erick Avari) arrives from Bajor and warns Sisko (Avery Brooks) that the Cardassians visit was foretold in a Bajoran prophecy and will only bring destruction. As the mission progresses, the prophecy begins to come true, including the appearance of a comet which could destroy the wormhole. Now, Sisko, who has always been reluctant to accept his role as Emissary, must make a fateful decision and face his destiny.
