On the fourth anniversary of his wife's death, Sisko (Avery Brooks) meets an intriguing alien woman, Fenna (Salli Elise Richardson), who captures his heart and then vanishes as quickly as she appeared. Meanwhile, Professor Seyetik (Richard Kiley), an expert in reviving dead planets, arrives on the station and much to Sisko's dismay, introduces his wife, Nidell - who looks exactly like Fenna. Strangely she doesn't seem to recognize Sisko at all. After another fleeting encounter with Fenna, Sisko learns that Nidell is a Halanan, a psychoprojective telepath who is trapped in an unhappy marriage - and Fenna is simply a creation of her imagination. But for Sisko she is all too real.
