When Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) leads an away team to investigate a suspected Romulan base near the Neutral Zone, he and the others are suddenly overcome by poisonous gases. Riker awakens, back on the Enterprise, but something has gone wrong - sixteen years have passed, and he can remember nothing in between. Riker, now captain of the Enterprise, soon learns he has a lot of catching up to do, including getting to know his own son, Jean-Luc (Chris Demetral). He is also expected to conclude the negotiations for an unprecedented peace treaty with the Romulans. But Riker senses something is amiss when, in order to conclude the negotiations, he must reveal to the Romulans the top secret location of a Federation outpost.
