Newly promoted Lt. Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes) returns to the Enterprise and embarks on an undercover mission to infiltrate the Maquis. As a Bajoran, she is uncomfortable with the assignment, but accepts the mission out of loyalty to Picard (Patrick Stewart). Posing as a fugitive accused of killing a Cardassian, she joins the band of renegades and assists them as they prepare for a preemptive strike against some Cardassian smugglers. Having earned the Maquis' trust, Ro meets secretly with Picard and sets a trap to capture the entire group. But as the Federation ships close in for the kill, Ro is torn between her loyalty to Picard and her hatred of the Cardassians. Ultimately, she will have to make a choice.
