The Abbott and Costello Show, which originally aired in syndication and on network daytime from 1951 through 1953, was not simply one of the most re-run situation comedies in the history of U.S. broadcasting, but one of the most influential, given the extent to which it introduced an offbeat, absurdist style of humor seen decades later on Seinfeld and other programs. Its storylines were deliberately skimpy and insubstantial - narrative hooks on which to repeatedly hang the titular duo's stock gags, such as "Who's On First" and "The Lemon Bit."
