The Kingston Trio: Nick Reynolds (vocals); Pat Horine (guitar); Jim Connor (banjo). Producers: Bob Richardson, Chuck Glaser. Compilation producer: Pat Horine. Recorded at Glaser Studios, Nashville, Tennessee and Mastersound Studio, Atlanta, Georgia. Please note that on the cover of this 1996 CD, the words "The New" precede the name "Kingston Trio" in smaller type. The original Kingston Trio--Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and John Stewart, who had replaced Dave Guard in 1961--had split up in 1967, following the disappointing sales of their last four albums on Decca Records. After a couple of years' worth of woodshedding, Shane, the original trio's primary lead singer, hooked up with a new pair of cohorts, banjo player Jim Connor (who later wrote John Denver's hit "Grandma's Feather Bed") and guitarist Pat Horine, and formed The New Kingston Trio. Interestingly, Shane updated the trio's sound not to match current folk music trends, but to put the group more in line with sunshine pop ensembles like the Association and the Mamas and the Papas. These recordings are as much classic late '60s soft pop as they are folk music. This set collects all of the new trio's recordings, almost all of them unreleased, bar a pair that were on a stiff Capitol Records single. The surprising highlight is a terrific version of Kinky Friedman's sorrowful "Sold American."
