In the early years of the first century, Rome grew from a fragile city-state torn by civil war to a dynasty that ruled the world under the shrewd leadership of Augustus. After the death of Augustus, Rome continued to grow and solidify its grip on the world, but at the same time the nation became increasingly unstable as wise and prudent leaders such as Tiberius alternated with Caligula and Nero, whose abuse of privilege helped bring down Rome.
