Resonant heads compliment the sound of your tom-tom batter heads. They give the tom-toms more articulation or more sustain, and make them sound brighter or darker. If you use a thinner resonant head than the batter head, you?ll get more attack and less sustain. This is a good combination for fast patterns on the tom-toms. Opposite types of heads, such as a coated batter head and a clear resonant head on the bottom, will vibrate at different frequencies, shortening the sustain and enhancing attack. Using the same type of heads together, such as a coated single ply on top and bottom or a clear single ply on top and bottom will provide maximum sustain and a full sound, as the heads will vibrate at the same frequency.
