Absolutely love this laptop. I've had it for about 2 years already before this review and had no regrets. I'm currently playing Starfield on it now. Not on max settings obviously but looks amazing all the same. Also an emulation beast if you're into that as well.
I have this laptop and on paper, it's great. But using it for some time, I've realized it is a buggy mess, it has the hardware but the software just sucks so hard. I had to mess with this laptop to fix it, even then it wasn't up to it's full potential, this latest update helped my fps increase but in return i got crazy stutters, there's always stupid trade offs with this laptop. Only buy this if you accept that you'll be twinking this thing forever. I've had this laptop 2 weeks and it had backlight bleed, which I don't mind, but the hinge is now making noise despite me lifting it correctly. I know I have warranty so I'll stick with it, but yeah, don't buy it overall.
If you are like me and have been killing yourself doing research...comparing... watching techy youtubers review laptops every chance uou gwt trying to decide on a machine. STOP. Buy this beautiful piece of machinery right now. This laptop is worth every penny and it is an absolute MONSTER of a computer, not just for gaming. The 8 core Ryzen 9 5900Hx coupled with 16gb of DDR4 dual channel memory at 3200Ghz makes every task seamless and an absolute joy. Right out of the box setup, all of the Windows uodates, and Updating the graphics drivers took a total of 4 minutes. WOW. Now on to the Graphics. This laptop comes with the Radeon RX6800M, with 12 Gb of DDR4. This graphics card is nothing short of amazing. It handles everything I throw at it with a breeze. I have not had a chance to test it out on too many more demabding AAA titles, but every game in my steam library runs flawlessly at 1080p on Ultra. The screen is not the brightest display that you could have, but for this price point having a 300Hz display is a steal. My previous laptop was a 60Hz panel, and I can say I can never go back now to anything less. Gameplay is buttery smooth. In my opinion the coolest aspect to this lapop is the RGB backlighting. You have a 4 ZONE Rgb for the keyboard, and arpund the front of the machine is a RGB lightbar that will emulate the same colors and or patterns as what the keyboard is set to. This is just a minor gripe, but you cannot turn off the front lightbar without turning off the keyboard as well. This only becomes an issue at night when Im trying to sleep as the lightbar can put off a great amount of light even on the lowest setting. The thermals on this machine are very nice. The liquid metal thermal paste does a great job of disippitating heat. It does such a good job in fact that if uou set a cold drink on the side or back of the laptop with exhaust vents, you'll have a warm drink in only a few minutes time. The only real hotspot Ive noticed so far is the exhaust vent on the right side (I'm right handed.) The laptop is no more heavier than my previous laptop, which kudos to Asus considering just how much highpowered hardware they packed into this machien for being a semi portable package. Battery life is to be expected on this machine given the high power wattage of the components. I mostly game while plugged in, but even if I take gaming on the go on battery power theres no noticeable drop in performance versus being plugged in. The wifi card in this laptop being Wifi 6 I also have no issues gaming without an ethernet cable. Even gaming on the go at my local coffee shop I have no connectivity issues. Overall this laptop has been nothing short of amazimg so far, and for the price point this had everything I was looking for. It supports up to 32Gb RAM dual channel, but all things considered it handles everything fine on just the stock memory. I did purchase a 1Tb Ssd to place in the second open NVMe slot for some extra storage. Another minor thing this laptop design does well is the I/O ports being mostly on the back of the laptop. The only ports on the side of the machine are the 2 USB 3.0 ports on the left side. This really makes a huge difference for cable clutter. This has been my first ASUS laptop purchase, and I am so glad that I pulled the trigger on this laptop when I saw a Best Buy open box for this product about $150 less than retail. I hope this review helps others take a serious look at this laptop.
I am delighted with this laptop, it is exactly what I wanted for my personal use, but my only problem that I have so far is that when I use it on battery power in a couple of minutes while checking my emails, netfliz, other applications, then it turns off and restarts with a blue screen and other times it just shuts off without any warning
I'll start with my issues as there were a few that I experienced. Initially, the Wi-Fi connection would not connect to 5Ghz and I had to use 2.4Ghz. After updating drivers, OS to 21H1, using recovery partition, etc. I resolved by installing a fresh Win10 OS. No idea what the issue was, but I have seen numerous posts in Reddit with users experiencing the same issue. Not a big deal... reimage the machine and you're golden. Only real hardware complaint I have with the machine is the touch pad almost seems like it's loose, where it make a dull click sound when lightly touching it. It's also lower on the left side of the touchpad than the right, whereas the left is sunk down below the frame of the case by about 1 or 2 mm. Right side is flush, where it should be. Really wish this thing came with a 2k option but I am very happy with the display. I'm using this for gaming as well as programming and it's a treat to use. It's bright, and using the buttons to lower/raise brightness is gradual as it should be, so you can get the exact brightness you are looking for. Keyboard is awesome. I like a quiet deck and this thing rocks! Would have paid extra for per-key RGB. Processor/GPU are amazing, fans are low most of the time but gear up as you would expect to keep things cool. For the price, this machine is awesome. A few gotchas that can be fixed via a rebuild and one you will quickly get over by using a mouse. Solid choice for anyone looking for a great machine.
