My husband loves this gps, we upgraded from an old garmin model which served the purpose but was not the nice thin flat screen. Very easy to read and use and has alot of useful features.

The Garmin Nuvi 760 is my second GPS unit, since the first one was stolen, with much more damage to my car than the GPS was worth; I would have rather given it to the guy. So word to the wise is get a friction mount for your dashboard and hide it every time you park (and clean off any suction cup residue on the windshield as well; they look for that too). My first unit was a Navigon 2100. The pros and cons are: The Navigon had access to satellite info that cannot be accessed by the Nuvi, such as number of satellites and precision of position, but it is probably mostly interesting to the scientific group. The Navigon showed local points of interest on the display map, and also showed clear traffic lane images on highways at exit points, and also showed both current and next turn data that the Nuvi does not display. The Nuvi (so far) seems to do a better job of computing routes, but does not tell you the total travel time, only the arrival time (the Navigon would do both on the main screen). The Nuvi acquires satellites somewhat faster, but not as good as the spec sheet would seem to indicate. The Nuvi tends to hide things, like MS Windows. The Navigon appears more open like Linux, but not necessarily programmable. The Nuvi also automates some things like switching day/night mode that are manual, but easy to change, in the Navigon. The Nuvi has more trip data, such as average speed, max speed, etc. that the Navigon does not compute. The Nuvi keeps a complete graphical history of your route, but I have not so far found a way to save this data. The Navigon will save your total trip mileage for tax recording purposes. I have not found this feature in the Nuvi (yet). The Nuvi will take lat-lon and save off-road location, which can be useful. For me this means saving the location of astronomical observatory sites on mountain tops that are so far off the main road the Navigon would not save them. Neither Navigon or Nuvi learns from you, such as taking routes that you know are more efficient in places where you know the back roads better. Both will recalculate the route and get it eventually, but they do not remember anything the next time you take this route. Nuvi has more flashy features like an FM transmitter, MP3 player, and such, but these are not the main purpose of the device, since I have other things for this, so I consider them somewhat pointless, but may be useful if you don't already have an MP3 player, or good CD player in your car. But then, you probably would not be buying a $250 GPS if that were true, since you can get the Navigon for less than half that. The biggest disadvantage of the Nuvi seems to be the unpublished processor speed, most likely slow, particularly for text-to-speech output, which is quite delayed and often too late. For instance, it often tells you to turn (now) after you must already be on an exit ramp with a barrier, so if you waited to hear the last verbal instruction you would miss the ramp. This actually happened to me one of the first times I used the Nuvi, so I learned not to rely upon that output. There is usually a warning earlier of the upcoming exit. The Navigon does much better in timing the voice outputs, but it also mispronounces street names more often. I think the timing is more important. The Nuvi mount is much smaller, not necessarily an advantage since it caused interference problems with my friction mount pad, but the cable comes out the side (via the mount) instead of the bottom, which is a plus that allows lower positioning of the display. The traffic report data is good, but confusing. On a trip from the NYC area to DC down I-95 we were told to get off I-95 and routed onto Hwy7 in Delaware with no explanation (as far as I can tell - the display is supposed to show this, I think). We decided to ignore it, thinking it was a map error (which the Navigon does have in some places). It turned out it was a traffic jam. The Nuvi automatically added 30 mins. to our arrival time, but then routed us through a service area back north on I-95, and off onto side highways. This actually worked (if we had not ignored it) so the traffic data does work, at least on major highways. On the whole, the Nuvi is better, but not twice as good as the Navigon 2100, for which you can buy traffic data as well.

I just love this nuvi 760!!! It allows me to be hands-free of cell phone while driving, and the accuracy of the global positioning is astounding. I can recommend this product to anyone. The sound that comes from the MP3 player built inside is tremendous, too! Great gift and a great purchase.
