This eTrex gets me within 2 feet to 10 feet from the cache. It comes with a fairly bad map but you can make your own topo with free online tools or download one someone else made. After a couple of finds the controls/menu get easy to use. Go ahead and order the case, you'll want it anyway.
This is a great product other than one annoying thing. The Screen is very visible in direct sunlight and when the backlight is on. With the backlight off in any kind of shadow (which is where I use this most of the time), the screen is almost impossible to see. My old Geko 201 is much easier to see in dim and direct light (when not using the backlight). In the dark though, the Legend is the best I have seen (with the backlight on). This is only an issue if you are concerned with battery life. Overall this is not a significant issue since rechargable batteries are cheap and it starts off with good battery life.
This GPS is the best one for Walmart's particularly low price. Probably the second best handheld for geocaching (the Vista HCX's electronic compass is handy) but it's about $100 more. Be sure to pick up a MicroSD card (2Gb is enough) for some extra maps - the built-in base map is not designed to be real useful. Also, I suggest getting some screen protectors before your first adventure with this as the screen WILL scratch. Great satellite signal, even indoors, intuitive use, and great support from Garmin. Usable as a car GPS with addon maps. Highly recommended.
This item is an *excellent* upgrade from my previous model, a blue Legend. After purchasing a $75 map set (unforeseen), this baby does anything I ask of it. As an avid off-roader, this GPS will track where I go and download tracks and waypoints to Google Earth via a mini-USB port on the back. While there are no voice-guided prompts, it signals upcoming turns well in advance. Geocache coordinate transfers are almost instantaneous. I'm delighted with this GPS unit.
I bought this product for geocaching and it does a better job than any other GPS I've used. The color screen with adjustable brightness helps a ton whether you're directly under the sun at midday or in the middle of a pitch black night. It works pretty well even under trees, but only a few at once. The only thing I've had any problems with is the compass and the road maps. I find the road maps to be a little hard to use and the compass will freeze, esp if near trees, and I have to wait a few minutes while walking around to get it to work again. It's worth the price, I'd say.
