0663292505020. New condition. CD. Recorded in Muscle Shoals' Fame Studios, Kate Campbell's first recorded foray into gospel music further proves the extent of her eclectic artistry. Her father having been a Baptist minister, Campbell draws on a childhood of listening to traditional gospel hymns and generally shows the influence of growing up in the eclectic musical mixing pot of the South. A strong r&b flavor is added via the work of veteran session men Spooner Oldham, Walt Aldridge, Mark Narmore, and David Wood, whose musical backdrop is perfectly suited for Campbell's deeply soulful renditions of Baptist hymns from the 18th and 19th century. Where Campbell knows she doesn't have Aretha Franklin's vocal prowess, she uses her limitations to her benefit, letting her supporting players help her create the thematic continuity that is neither too studied nor too stale. The strongly evocative imagery of "There is a Fountain" and the ominous minor key melodies of "The Prodigal" fit perfectly beside originals like forewarning '10,000 Lures" and the tribute to victims of the 1963 Birmingham church bombing in "Bear it Away." A treat for fans of religious and secular music alike, Campbell's homecoming displays the class and taste that very few, save Emmylou Harris, are capable of summoning. ~ Matt Fink, Rovi
