Zika-carrying mosquitoes recently appeared in my area of Southern California. There are areas in my yard that form puddles after it rains, and I also have water out for the birds so these are a terrifc way for me to continue to leave water out for wildlife and also prevent the infected mosquitoes from breeding and spreading in my area.
I put this in my small pond that does not have fish. It was gone in a day. I don't know if that means it is working because it is dissolved in the water or who knows what. The instructions do not say if you should still see the thing floating around. I would think that if it dissolves they could just make the product as a powder or liquid so I'm assuming something is wrong. I also don't know if it is safe with fish and could not find that info so I did not put it in my large pond.
This is a bad year for mosquito-borne virus infections, especially EEE and West Nile Virus. I need to keep some open containers with water around the yard and the mosquito control rings give me confidence that the larvae won't survive in the water. This is part of my mosquito-fighting arsenal along with repellents on my skin and clothes and also birds and bats.
I have a very uneven yard, next to a creek...lots of moisture! And Pennsylvania has become a rainforest these past few years, sooo...I've used these dunks since they first appeared, maybe 20 years ago...always find them effective, and eco-safe. Hard to find sometimes, so glad Gardener's has them!
I have used dunks in the past in my bird baths.Unlike these they lasted several days. These seem to disappear overnight and look as if something is eating them. I have not seen anything doing that but the next morning there are only crumbs and bits in the water. Is this how these work? It should explain if this is so.They are convenient and have worked well in the past but this is causing consternation!
