Picard (Patrick Stewart) assigns La Forge (LeVar Burton) to use an experimental interface unit to rescue the science vessel Raman, which has become trapped inside the upper atmosphere of a gaseous planet. While preparing for the mission, Geordi learns that the starship Hera, commanded by his mother, Silva La Forge (Madge Sinclair), has been lost. Though he is given time to grieve, Geordi refuses to give up hope that his mother will be found and elects to continue with the mission. Soon, via the interface, he journeys inside the Raman where he comes face to face with his mother, who seems very much alive!.
