Have had this battery since November, 2015 Still going strong
When I bought my 1996 Sonoma in 2007 one of these batteries was in it. Now in 2014 I had to replace the alternator so I had the battery tested too - It's still fine. as of Feb 10/15
OPTIMA Red Top: NOT a GEL CELL product! It IS an AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) A Red Top is NOT a DC (Deep Cycle) battery. You cannot discharge and recharge on a continuous basis. If you have an OLD truck that does that, get yourself an OPTIMA Yellow Top DC and get the alternator (or generator) repaired. Yellow Top DC batteries are also best in RV and Travel Trailer service. I've been running RED Tops and Yellow Top DC/Cranking batteries in commercial service and tractors for over 25 years and have yet to have a problem, within reason. If it's over 5 years old and finally gives up, replace it and then get over it. For a $200 battery used daily at $3.33/month you have gotten your monies worth for 60 months. I have had OPTIMA Batteries here in Yuma, AZ that have lasted 10+ years when used in the proper/expected service. Out here, in real farm country, it can get very HOT in Summers and very COLD, well, you know. OPTIMA's can be mounted down side, UP without issues, get knocked over without a spilling SAFETY ISSUE and can be used in Aircraft service like any approved AGM battery. Most OPTIMA's are 3 year replacements and 2 year replacements with pro-rating for additional age. Go with an OPTIMA and your battery problems won't completely go away, Dreamer... but 12v electrical issues will be reduced considerably! Learn about the RIGHT product for your needs.
I bought it because it was a gel-type battery and expected it to last like the gel-type battery we had on our '73 Chevy truck which had been in use for 9+ years. This one lasted just 2 months over 5 years. Called to see about a prorated warranty and was told it was warranted for 3 years and nothing more. The battery was dead and apparently shorted internally as the battery charger was pegging at over 15 amps. I could have paid this much money for a top-of-the-line regular battery and had a better service life. According to most of the reviews, my situation is uncommon. That being said, I won't be buying another Optima. I'll either purchase a regular battery or a gel-type from a different manufacturer, certainly not from Optima.
I have had the red top in my sport trac for 3 years now and it's awesome, it costs more but worth every penny, oops, nickel. Live in Muskoka where it can get to -40 C, my vehicle lives outside, no garage and starts every time!
