I drive the interstate for a living and I have used both Garmin and Tom Tom GPS devices. I prefer the Tom Tom One XLS over the Garmin Nuvi 760 for the following reasons. *Tom Tom has more display themes then Garmin *Tom Tom shows one way street designations on my route while Garmin does not. *While Tom Tom and Garmin both have traffic warning advisory capabilities. *Only Tom Tom has weather warning advisory capabilities. Garmin does not. *The only negative thing against Tom Tom is the widow suction cup does not stay stuck to my window. I use the bean bag cradel for it, and that works fine.
For the price, this device gets you from point A to point B without ANY hassles. Offers tons of features that other brands don't offer within the price range. You would have to be crazy to choose any other brand. I have passed this XL-S onto my sister and have upgraded to a TomTom 720. If I could buy another XL-S I would.
After buying and returning the One XL S, my wife tried a Garmin. We wound up returning the Garmin and getting the One XL S again for a few basic reasons: (1) the One XL S had more custom voice options; (2) the graphics for the maps are much more visually pleasing; (3) the menus of the One XL S are easier to navigate. The One XL S is a great value for getting so many advanced features for the price of a sparsely equipped version from other manufacturers. The only downside we've seen is that the map accuracy is not great. There are several streets in our part of town that are on the map in the wrong location, some that are missing entirely, and some that are present when they don't exist at all. These are neighborhoods, shopping centers, and schools that have been around for at least 10 years in every case. When we put our own home's address in the GPS, it flags a location about a half mile up the street from us, so it always tells us we're home when we're still several blocks away. Our house has been in the same location since it was built over 13 years ago. We noticed this same scenario with our parent's house out in the country on a large plot of land. The unit is probably just fine for commercial destinations, but if you're trying to get to a private dinner party in a suburb, good luck finding the house let alone the street or neighborhood. That said, if you can find your own way for the last mile of any trip, this is a great value. Maybe a $50 map upgrade would fix some of these issues, but we haven't tried it yet.
Got this in early Jan 2009. Worked right out of the box. Easy to use. TomTom Home allows map downloads and program updates. Installed a 2GB SD card, updated maps etc. No problems. Lots of features and reroutes in seconds. Got a Magellen for Christmas, it worked about 4 hours and died.
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my dad who loves electronics. I was a little disappointed to find out that the first time he used it his home address wasn't on the map. He just moved to a sub-division that has been there for at least 2 years. When he called Tom-Tom he was advised that it wasn't on any of the maps they have at this time. Other than that I think that it is the best GPS around for the cost.
