i chose this because it was supposed to be akinda fool proof. ive had a fe wamchines over the years, but this one is taking the biscuit, the lower bobbin cannot have its tension adjusted which is a really annoying problem, the upper tension is very stuff, so even on the lowest setting it is way too tight. not only that but even with the presser foot down the tension is very high, even with the tension wheel off the thread, the tension is high enough to bend the needle, i think its the arm design. theres also a screw which hits the tension wheel and creates tension against the front end of the wheel, where it should be stable. the spring seems to also catch along its little bar causing it to stick in high tension and then suddenly lose all tension then snap back. the feed dogs are not able to be adjusted with any button or lever that i can find. i think realistically a begginner shoudl start with a machine that has all the machanical aspects up front in view and easily replacable. you alway sneed to know how to fix thing son a machine, if you buy a machine like this where everything is automated for you and something goes wrong you cannot adjust anything to fix it. and taking it to singer repair shops is costly and usually far away. you want a machine with paarts that you can see what they are doing, that are basic, and strong, and easy to replace or adjust mechanically. then you get to know how machines work what different part sare doing and hwo to solve issues. which is a huge part of learning to sew. sure if you just want to make something for fun once a year then this is a great toy. but if you are using anything but standard thread counts, standard medium weight fabrics, i dunno. i honestly dont know how anyone copes with this machine. it constantly fails on me. i test the tension everything is fine two minutes of slow careful stitching later is is making a grinding noise and chewing up my fabric. vote of no confidence.

Looked at a few machines and reviews this machine came out tops everything, so I purchased one. It is more than I expected.simple to use, lots of fantastic built in stitches. Looking forward to using this machine for my projects. Cannot find any faults. Soooo glad this is the machine I purchased.

I was very excited to be able to buy a new sewing machine after 30+ years. I chose Singer due to its reputation and my familiarity with their products. I got my Confidence 7470 in January and after 6 hours of straight stitch usage the thread jammed and I was unable to resolve it. I had to send it for warranty service in February. Upon receipt back after repair, the machine has persisted in breaking thread and jamming in spite of repeated attempts to adjust tension etc. The main reason I bought the machine was its twin needle capacity, and three separate attempts at using the twin needle have been completely unsuccessful. The manual gives minimal information regarding use of the twin needle. For its price, the design of the bobbin cover makes it incredibly difficult to remove and replace. Also, you must be vigilant about tightening the needle in place with a screwdriver, else it will come out easily. There is only one warrant service center near where I live, and it's over an hour away. I would love to be able to take the machine there in person to have someone witness what it's doing, and to confirm or deny that I'm doing something wrong. But the reality is that a new, expensive sewing machine should not be malfunctioning like this one, and I'm not sure it's worth the time, money, and gasoline. I am very disappointed at having spent a considerable amount for such an inferior product.

I just took my Singer 7470 out of the box and on initial use the machine is making a friction noise. I already own a Singer 7470 and that has never made such a noise. The reason for this second 7470 is that it is a Christmas gift and now I can leave the old 7470 with the feed dogs dropped and use it for quilting and use the new one for sewing because the feed dogs on the previous one wouldn't come up once dropped ( a known issue with this model based on other reviews). Now I've been on waiting/hold for a customer service representative for the over 1 hour. Hoping to talk to someone soon to figure out what this noise is and if I'll be able to finish the Christmas gifts in time.

I've been enjoying my machine since I've gotten it (not long ago). I like the many computerized. stitches it has and that I'm able to change to a different stitch right in the middle of a project, if I want, with no hesitation. It's a really great machine.
